White Dental Fillings
White Fillings, which are also known as composite resins or porcelain inlays, allow teeth to be filled and rebuilt utilising highly aesthetically materials such as composite resin or porcelain.
Importance of White Fillings
White Fillings do not contain mercury and are an ideal choice for achieving long term strength in filled teeth. Teeth that are heavily filled with large silver amalgam or mercury fillings are at risk of fracturing because the tooth is spread apart by these traditional filling materials. These teeth can be rebuilt with porcelain inlays, which holds the tooth together as opposed to spreading it apart, preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure allowing teeth to be safely and aesthetically restored achieving a more attractive smile.
In the past- Silver amalgam or mercury fillings clearly visible and aesthetically unattractive.
Today- White Fillings achieve an aesthetic and natural looking finish whilst avoiding the use of mercury. They also serve to hold the filled teeth together rather than spreading them apart.
Is it right for you?
White fillings can be bonded to your teeth to improve your smile by changing the colour, shape and size of a tooth, to restore a broken tooth invisibly; and to close spaces between the front teeth. White fillings can also be placed in back teeth where they can be used instead of gray amalgam fillings, which can detract from an otherwise beautiful smile.
What’s involved?
Following your dental assessment, your dentist then places the composite in layers, using a light specialised to harden each layer. When the process is finished, the dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth. The dentist then polishes the composite.
Placement time depends on the size and location of the cavity-the larger the size, the longer it will take. Most composite fillings are placed in an appointment that lasts between 40 minutes and 60 minutes.
What are the main benefits of white fillings?
Aesthetics’ are the main advantage, since dentists can blend shades to create a colour nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composites bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes.
Are there any disadvantages of having white fillings?
After receiving a composite, a patient may experience slight sensitivity, this should settle shortly after treatment has been completed. Sometimes the shade of the composite can change slightly if the patient drinks tea, coffee or other staining foods.
How long will a white filling last?
Studies have shown that composites last 7-10 years, except in very large restorations, where inlays, onlays or crowns would be recommended, as they would last longer than composites./white fillings.
